1808/7 - O.101 R.1 PCGS MS 64
Ex Eugene Gardner. This is a show-stopping, breath taking 1808/7. The depth of luster is astounding. The lightly toned surfaces exhibit minimal signs of contact. There is not a hint of friction on the coin. The strike is first rate. Liberty’s cap, curls and drapery lines are in bold relief. The same must be said of the eagle’s neck, wings and claws. In short, the coin has everything one expects – and more - in an “MS 64” bust half-dollar. Why not a “65?” A guess is the smidgen of planchet roughness at the 5 of the denomination. Gardner acquired the coin from Heritage in October 2008, paying $14,375, a bargain in today’s market. Est. $12,500 to $16,500.
