1827 - Sq. Base 2 O.137 R.6 PCGS XF 40
Here is a classic rarity from the Capped Bust series. In the 30+ years since my introduction to early half-dollars the population has risen from less than a dozen pieces to the present population of about 20. The same is true of the comparably rare 1817 O.104 and 1831 O.120. Every three or four years a new example appears. The opportunity to capture one of these rarities must not be ignored. This piece is solid for the grade. The obverse strike, of course, is mushy. The die was first used on the O.136 and was in its dotage when it married a new partner. The toning is a mix of dusky grey, brown and copper, a tad uneven on the obverse. A pleasing dose of luster radiates through the legend and reverse fields. The surfaces are remarkably free of ticks and abrasions. Has the time finally arrived to fill that hole in your 1827s? Est. $9,500 to $12,000.
