1820 -  Lg. Date, Sq.2 w/ Knob O.104 R.4+ PCGS Shield MS 63

From the Link Collection, though not noted on the PCGS label. In days past I called the 1820 O.104 a “sleeper,” overshadowed by the “no serifs” O.107. No more. Its true rarity has reached the light of day. This coin, for example, showed up on eBay in April 2014; it caught the attention of several collectors. When the smoke cleared Dr. Link prevailed at $7,110. Three months earlier it took over $18,000 to land an MS 64 O.104 at Heritage’s FUN Show sale (lot 4427). We expect the disappointed underbidders from 2014 to rejoice at this opportunity. The coin is unquestionably mint state. Its silver-grey centers are circled by shades of original, smoky grey toning. The luster is exactly what we expect of a choice uncirculated bust half. A contact mark under the eagle’s beak is the only mark worth mention. A note to cherry pickers: the 1820 O.104 and 105 share the same obverse – large date, square base 2 with knob; the reverse of the O.104 may be quickly identified by a peek at ED in UNITED; the D is distinctly lower than the E. Est. $6,500 and up.
