Ex Don Frederick. Lot 2990 from the Frederick sale. (See lots 72-73.) A heavy die crack from the rim above star 7 into cap and a thin die break through stars 8 to 13 mark the terminal state of the obverse die. The latter die break was unknown to Overton; examples with the star 8-13 die break carry a rarity estimate of R.5 in the latest edition of Herrman’s AMBPR. The Frederick-Link coin is the finest known. (Once again PCGS omitted Frederick’s name from the updated holder.) Heritage was succinct and accurate in its description: This splendid Mint State piece has frosty silver luster beneath light ivory at the centers, with deep steel peripheral toning [and] has exceptional eye appeal for the grade.
